Waldorf education prides itself on providing more to a student than just an opportunity to get into university. When it comes to the final year of Waldorf, students “hit” the books and prove that we are as strong as any other school, despite it not being integral to our brand of education. We thrive to provide an education which is inclusive across multiple disciplines for twelve of the thirteen years, and the reason behind this is that it enables students to excel in the discipline they have an affinity towards. And, even if a student claims they have no affinity, this process provides exposure, where they may find that calling or passion. A great strength of the Waldorf process is that every single student is given an opportunity, despite how limited their skills seemingly are, which does wonders for a child’s mind and development.

A discipline which is synonymous with Michael Oak, in particular, is the drama component. This is a beacon of every Michael Oak alumnus; I should know since I am one. A student knows within themselves, if they are a performer or not, but unlike other schools, which keep you to your strengths, Waldorf challenges learners. Every student takes part in every production, starting in Class 9s Shakespeare play, where each student receives an opportunity to be the main character, despite their level of performance. The reason why that is so important, is because each year at Waldorf a theme and or motif is reflected throughout the year’s work. Class 12 is creation; they need to bring something of substance for the world to see. Class 11 is empathy; they need to live through other’s experiences. Class 9 is transformation; they must demonstrate that they are adaptable and changing, demonstrating their autonomy in the world. The Shakespeare process develops the self-image, confidence and co-operation, as well as, fundamentally, the voice. Each component is something we want learners to carry with them for the rest of their lives, as the play is just a play, but the process is magical, just like this year’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Meanwhile, a group of amateur actors rehearsing a play are drawn into the confusion, with hilarious results. By dawn, the spells are undone, the lovers are reunited, and harmony is restored.
